One of the things that attracts most online business owners to the solopreneur life is the ability to set our own schedules — being able to pack a bag at the drop of a hat and leave all your worries behind. But that’s easier said than done, right? When you have a business, you can’t exactly just leave for days on end and expect everything to not implode? Well, what if I told you that there’s a way to make that happen? Read on to find out!
So you’re probably asking right now, “How can I take a vacation as an OBM?” You feel nervous about leaving your business while you jet off around the world because you spent a lot of time, energy and money on getting it off the ground, landing your ideal clients… not to mention that it’s your source of income. But here’s the beauty of it: with a dependable team and systems in place (did somebody say standard operating procedures??) you don’t have to worry about any of that!
Yes, you can (and you should) take that well-deserved vacation! And I’m going to let you in on the big secret that lets you do just that: SOP delegation.
Now, you’re probably wondering what you can create SOPs for… You can make SOPs for any tasks that recur in a business, whether it’s client onboarding or to product launches. This way, your business becomes dependent on a system rather than people. The people are responsible for maintaining and managing the systems, but with SOPs in place, if somebody gets sick or somebody goes on holiday another team member can easily step in and pick up where that person left off – without compromising the quality or consistency of the work.
Creating SOPs may seem like a daunting task to some, maybe you think that you have a million other things to do first. But trust me, once you’ve set them up and your business starts to run like clockwork, you’re gonna be grateful you did! If you want to see what my SOPs look like, I have a free download here so be sure to check that out!
The other important things to consider about SOPs are accessibility and organization. Make sure that they’re available to everyone on your team and that they can access the most updated versions wherever and whenever they need to. Apps like Google Drive and project management tools like Teamwork are a few of my favorite tools that make it possible to collaborate on your files, see them all together, and see who’s doing what. They are a lifesaver to business owners, especially when working with remote teams.
And there you have it! Taking that dream vacation is a lot more likely than you think! Just be sure to follow my tips, write out some great SOPs and systematize your business so that it keeps going – even when you take a break!
