For every amazing OBM client, there’s always that “nightmare client” who can wreak havoc on your business – and they don’t just come out at Halloween! I’m sharing my top tips for dealing with nightmare clients – including the red flags to look out for AND how to steer clear of monstrous mistakes that can co-create your very own Frankenstein client!
Since starting my OBM business over a decade ago, I’ve worked with a ton of different clients. Each working relationship is a learning experience, and as a result, it’s taken me a lot of trial and error to learn how to distinguish the good from the bad right off the bat!
There are many ideal OBM clients out there who are a total dream to work with… But then there are those few “nightmare clients” who are simply bad news for your business.
Bad client relationships can have a negative impact on your business bottom line. Nightmare clients might try to squeeze EVERY dime they spend on your services for what it’s worth, making unreasonable requests or constantly expecting you to work beyond your means. Ultimately, this can not only affect your revenue, but also the quality of work you deliver.
Worse still, working with these clients can totally crush your confidence – especially if you’re a new OBM or entrepreneur. They likely won’t value your time or respect the boundaries you put in place. They can leave you feeling underappreciated for the awesome work you do as an OBM. And they can have you doubting the skills and abilities you bring to the table.
Unfortunately, nightmare clients don’t always come waving a big red flag. And sometimes, much like in the tale of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”, WE are actually guilty of co-creating these monsters through our own lack of boundary-setting or unclear onboarding procedures (been there!).
