Question: what is one of the most common mistakes that online businesses and entrepreneurs make when scaling their businesses? The answer may surprise you… Ready? The answer is team! Specifically, not leveraging it enough and neglecting or failing to put practices in place that cultivate a happy, successful and thriving remote team. Are you guilty of these remote team management mistakes? Read on to find out!
One thing that an online service professional leading a virtual or remote team may not intend to do – but happens fairly often – is to overlook the value of building a relationship with your remote team because you don’t see each other face-to-face every day. And I get it. You’re focused on your own responsibilities and day-to-day tasks, as are your team members. It can be difficult to try and spark a relationship when the only facetime you have with each other has a meeting agenda attached to it.
The truth of the matter is, building a relationship is just as important – if not even more important for a remote team than it would be for a face-to-face team, where engagement and participation come more naturally.
But here’s what I can tell you, as someone who’s been on both sides of the Zoom room – if you, as a business owner, are feeling detached from your team, your team will absolutely be feeling the same way, if not more. And if this happens, they may not care as much about you and your business as they should or could, which is one surefire factor in why remote team turnover is at a high with online businesses.
It’s important to go out of your way to make time for impromptu calls with your team once or twice a month to connect, catch up on your personal lives, and even gain some insight they might have for your business that may not come up otherwise in a more structured and official business call.
When envisioning your team, you should think of it as an investment and you get as much from them as you put in. It’s important to set your team up for success so that you can have a productive remote team that works well together.
Additionally, investing time in having updated and easily accessible Standard Operating Procedures will pay back in spades! Without that, you’ll end up having a bunch of moving parts without much direction, which can lead to chaos and confusion in your business.
You’ll be surprised at how much these simple practices can improve the relationship you have with your team and increase your chances of having a successful, happy and productive working and personal relationship.
